Chinatown Market is a Los Angeles streetwear brand born from the mind of Mike Cherman. Mike grew up in the Jewish neighborhood of New York, later moving to San Diego, California.
Creativity distinguishes Cherman, at 24 years old he launched his first "do it yourself" t-shirt brand, ICNY, fusing clothing and 3M technology with homemade prints hot-stamped with an iron; so he starts selling them in a little shop created in the trunk of his car. He subsequently abandons the idea of ICNY for legal reasons, what he draws goes viral but no one knows who is behind his creations, so he decides to give life to the Chinatown Market brand in 2016.
The name derives from the characteristic area of Canal Street in New York, the city where he grew up. Contrary to what one might think, the name is not linked to Chinese culture but is inspired by the rebellious spirit of the LA area. The brand entered the world of fashion, achieving enormous success due to the numerous rip-offs (ironic imitations) of the products offered by various luxury maisons and thanks to the use of innovative materials. The iconic Smile logo, influential in the streetwear world, is printed on shirts, trousers, tracksuits, sweatshirts, jackets and a myriad of accessories, including footballs and basketballs. The brand with the yellow laughing face transmits the brand's DNA: dreamer, crazy and visionary, becoming a travel companion, much more than a simple logo. Chinatown Market launches innovative and experimental ideas, such as sneakers capable of changing color or shirts with UV graphics. This is what was missing from the contemporary urban style of the streetwear world.
In 2021 the brand changes its name to Market while maintaining the iconic smile in the colorful graphics.
