Everyone knows the name Michael Jordan not only as the GOAT of NBA history but also for the legendary Air Jordan line. However, only a few know the story behind...
Legendary story, stellar cast and details unknown to most. Warner Bros. Italia took us to see the preview of AIR: Nike's ode to the most loved sneaker of all time , and to the team that made possible the visionary project on which Nike Basketball bet everything in 1984: Air Jordan 1 .
Nike today is the best-known and best-selling activewear and streetwear brand in the world, but few people know that in the mid-80s it was still in its infancy. Nike had not yet managed to break through the wall that limited its footwear to the sports world, separating it from lifestyle and everyday outfits, as was the case for Adidas and Converse. However, no one imagined what was about to happen.
Newly public, things were changing at Nike's Beaverton headquarters. The founder, Phil Knight - played often by Ben Affleck, to say the least, probably still pumped up by Batman - had to deal with the new board of directors, who threatened to close Nike's basketball section. While the running department was doing great with the Cortez, in fact, the Nike Basketball team was chasing rival brands to snatch the most popular NBA Draft rookies from them and, let's face it, without great success.
It was 1984, and Sonny Vaccaro, Nike Basketball talent agent considered Nike's oracle on future NBA champions, had an intuition while analyzing the best plays of the rookies in their NCAA games. On the highlight film of the Final between UNC Tar Heels vs. Georgetown Hoyas, Sonny - with the penetrating gaze of Matt Damon - saw the confidence and calm of a killer, and of a champion, of a just eighteen-year-old MJ in the most important moment of his career: the game-winning shot from that 1982 game.
A vision that changed everything: the man of the future, on whom it was truly worth betting everything, career, name and friendships, was one and only one: Michael Jordan.
AIR - The Story of the Big Leap tells the story of how Sonny Vaccaro managed to convince everyone of that vision, avoiding the curse of Cassandra that loomed over him. By following Nike's values, which return several times during the film, embedded in the wall of Phil's office, and which Phil himself risked forgetting in his role as CEO of a publicly traded company, he broke the rules of the Game and did the impossible to tie Michael Jordan to Nike.
Today, the history of the NBA, basketball and the way of conceiving athletic sneakers shows us every day that Sonny Vaccaro saw in Michael Jordan what only a few had seen, the greatest of all time, the GOAT
From the furious arguments between Sonny and David Falk, Jordan's agent, to Sonny's confrontations with a majestic Viola Davis, in the guise of Michael's mother, Deloris Jordan - especially in the final negotiation in which Deloris tore out the clause for which her Mike would have earned a percentage from every sale of Nike Air Jordan, transforming a million-dollar contract into the largest contract ever stipulated by an athlete and creating a historical precedent -, passing through the solemn moment in which Sonny Vaccaro, Rob Strasser, president of Nike Marketing Basketball - with the face of Jason Bateman - and Peter Moore, pioneer designer and visionary of sneakers, give life to the legendary silhouette of the Air Jordan 1.
AIR - The story of the great leap is a film full of funny, exciting and moving episodes, which make the ode to a brand an unmissable docu-novel.
Thanks to the invitation of Worner Bros. Italia, we went to see it at the preview on Monday, April 3, but AIR - The story of the big leap will be in Italian and international cinemas from April 6, 2023.
